Do you smell that? What could it be? When it comes to a bathroom, who doesn’t want it to be clean? That’s sometimes easier said than done, though. Bathrooms are damp, high-traffic areas. Over time, all kinds of smells and stains develop. Sure, there are harsh chemicals, like bleach, but what are other methods that are less toxic? If you’ve been wondering how to make a bathroom smell good, you’re in the right place! We’re going to tell you everything you need to know.
Why Do Bathrooms Smell?
Have you ever wondered why bathrooms smelled? Aside from the obvious, a bathroom’s unpleasant scent is often attributed to an excess of moisture in the air. This excess moisture permeates the porous surfaces in your bathroom and causes things like mold and mildew within the material itself. On non-porous surfaces, like tile, the mold and mildew are only on the surface level. Tile floors are a great option for bathrooms because they’re durable and stain-resistant.
Aside from the issue of excess moisture, another smell-causing factor in bathrooms is poor plumbing. If your sink, shower, or toilet is clogged, this allows for some foul smells to appear. The smelly gas within the pipes will waft up into the air and make your bathroom smell. If you’re experiencing a clog, you should have a professional plumber come unclog your drains. Not sure if you have a clog? If you notice any bubbling, gurgling, foul smells, or slow draining, you most likely have a clog.
How To Make A Bathroom Smell Good
Many people’s natural instinct is to reach for Clorox or bleach-based sprays to handle their stinky bathroom. Bleach isn’t always the answer. Not only is bleach a toxic chemical, but there are plenty of natural ways to make your bathroom smell better.
White or Apple Cider Vinegar
Vinegar kills bacteria and smells extremely well. Whether you’re dealing with tile floors, toilets, or carpets, vinegar is a great asset to have. If you’d like to obliterate the smells in your bathroom, simply soak a sponge with vinegar and wipe all surfaces down. For things like a toilet, you may let it sit overnight to really work its magic.
Baking Soda
Just like vinegar, baking soda has natural odor-destroying properties that make it powerful. After wiping all your surfaces down with vinegar, you can sprinkle baking soda all over the floor, in the toilet, shower, sink, and anywhere else you think may smell. Simply wipe up the baking soda after allowing it to sit for a minimum of one hour. Also, baking soda is an excellent natural polisher. If you see any tough spots in your sink or shower, just rub the baking soda around in small circles to buff out any spots. It is also excellent for stainless steel cleaning.
Citrus
Citrus is a natural deodorizer, so save those orange, lemon, and lime peels! If you’d like, you can take a lemon and squeeze it on whatever you want to deodorize and wipe it around. If you want something more potent, lemon essential oil is a great option as well. There are also tons of all-natural homemade citrus cleaner recipes out there that work great as all-purpose cleaners.
