How To Fix A Leaky Hose Bib

So, your outdoor hose bib is leaking. Don’t panic. Most likely, you should be able to repair it yourself. In today’s post, we’re going to tell you how to fix a leaky hose bib. It’s usually a simple fix, so read on to find out how to get rid of that annoying leak today.

How To Fix A Leaky Hose Bib: Try This

Try Tightening The Nut

Next to the faucet handle, there’s a nut. Oftentimes, this nut becomes loose over time and causes annoying and small leaks. Grab a pair of channel locks. Once you’ve got some channel locks, tighten the nut down as much as you can. Then, test the water and see if it leaks again.

Replace Damaged Washers

Damaged washers are one of the most common causes of leaks in plumbing. Depending on the spigot, there may be washers in different places. First, check and see if there’s a washer in the female ring on the end of the bib. If it’s damaged, use a cotter pin puller or similar tool to remove it.

Another place to check for washers is behind the bib assembly. First, you’ll want to turn off the water supply. Usually, this is in the crawlspace, basement, or garage of your home. Then, use channel locks to unscrew the nut that attaches the faucet to the pipe. Once you remove the screw inside the assembly, you can pop the washer out. When you replace any kind of plumbing part, take it with you to the store. If you take it with you to the store, you won’t have to go back and forth.

Now, reassemble the hose bib. Is the leak is gone? If so, great job! If not, you may want to consider giving us a call at Autry Plumbing. After all, we are Asheville, NC’s premier plumbing experts.
