You routinely clean your home, wiping down familiar places and going in-depth to clean baseboards, ceiling fans, and windows. However, do you ever think about clearing your drains? You probably need to give cleaning your drains more thought than using your garbage disposal. Clogged drains can lead to serious issues, so it’s best to address them as soon as you realize there’s a problem.

Clogged Drains

You may wonder if you need to hire a professional plumber to clean your drains. However, clogged drains can seriously harm your home. Call our crew if you require drain cleaning in Asheville, NC. Let’s discuss three significant issues that clogged drains might cause, along with their solutions.

Impacts on Health

Enduring a slowly draining sink is not a huge deal. Clogs, however, can hold onto bacteria and serve as a haven for the growth of germs and even viruses. These microorganisms can escape from your sink and enter the air as it backs up.

Allergies can be made worse by bacteria and germs, making you and your family sick. The bacteria might irritate your skin and cause excessive dryness if you overfill your sink with water to wash things. Even while you might not become ill, you could experience a persistent cough, sore throat, or runny nose.

Odors

As microscopic particles wash down your sink, clogs in your drain also catch them, growing more and more significant with time. Your drain can smell foul as mold and mildew develop inside the obstruction. The scent may initially only be detectable if you crouch down close to the sink, but as time passes, it may become more potent and spread farther. Your entire home may smell unpleasant if you have clogs in several drains without you being able to figure out why.

Structural Damage

The structural damage to your home caused by clogged drains may be the biggest issue. Your pipes may experience wear and tear from clogs, which will cause them to age more quickly. If obstructions in the primary pipes cause water to back up, you risk having leaks and structural water damage to your property. Your house has pipes under the flooring, in the foundation, and inside the walls and ceiling. Any of these pipes may be affected by clogs, which may result in invisible leaks. It’s possible that you won’t notice water damage until it’s done significant damage.

Pay attention to any dark patches that form on your ceiling or walls. It’s also a good sign that you have faulty pipes nearby if you notice mold growth. By scheduling a drain cleaning, you may stop current clogs before they worsen and avoid creating new ones. Our staff can even make recommendations on how to keep foreign objects and dirt from clogging your drains.

One of the most undervalued comforts we have is having access to an almost limitless supply of hot water at home. You can take a hot shower virtually whenever you want and wash your dishes in hot water to increase the cleaning power. Your water heater tank fills back up when you run out of hot water and starts heating fresh water for when you need it again.

Water Heater Maintenance

So how can you maintain your water heater and make sure it keeps heating water to your standards? If you neglect routine water heater maintenance, your water heater will likely present you with some serious issues, and it will function more effectively and last longer if you take care of it. Give us a call to set up an appointment if you’re in the Asheville, NC area, and prepared to arrange water heater services.

Annual Upkeep for a Water Heater

If you neglect routine maintenance, your water heater will present you with a few serious issues. Regular water heater maintenance will help you save money on energy expenditures each month and will make your water heater last years longer than is typical.

Buildup of Minerals in a Water Heater

The water storage tank’s mineral deposit at the bottom is the main cause for concern. Calcium and magnesium concentrations are higher in hard water. When you drink the water, you might not necessarily see or taste these particles, but they are still there.

These minerals eventually form a barrier between the water that is being stored in the bottom of your water heater. The minerals may prevent heating elements from efficiently supplying your home with the desired water temperature. In an effort to heat your water more effectively, your water heater could also try to work harder. Your energy expenses could go up as a result, costing you more each month. So that your water heater maintains its effectiveness year after year, our staff can scrape out the mineral accumulation from the bottom of your tank once a year.

Anode Rod for Water Heaters

The anode rod is the other main area of worry. Every water heater has an anode rod inside the tank that, by gradually dissolving over time, guards against rust. However, the rod eventually needs to be replaced because it fully degrades after three to five years. Although you can’t foresee when it will totally disintegrate, a member of our staff can examine your unit and provide a reliable estimate.

If you don’t change the anode rod once it dissolves, your water heater could corrode and deteriorate more quickly. This is not only detrimental to your water heater. Your water’s quality may be impacted by rust. Your hot water may include more pollutants and have decreased water pressure.

Is a High-power Flush Toilet Necessary? https://autryplumbing.com/is-a-high-power-flush-toilet-necessary/ https://autryplumbing.com/is-a-high-power-flush-toilet-necessary/#respond Tue, 18 Oct 2022 21:16:24 +0000 https://autryplumbing.com/?p=12808 Have you been annoyed by your toilet's weak flush, or are you looking for the best high power flush toilet for your house?

The post Is a High-power Flush Toilet Necessary? appeared first on Autry Plumbing LLC - Plumbers Asheville NC.

]]>
Have you been annoyed by your toilet’s weak flush, or are you looking for the best high power flush toilet for your house? If you frequently have clogged drains or must flush twice to finish everything, a high-pressure toilet may be the solution. You can learn more about the advantages of a high-pressure toilet and whether you should buy one in this article.

There are four types of high power flush toilet.

There are four kinds of high-power flush toilets created for the household market. They all have one factor: greater flush strength than the standard gravity-assisted toilet. Here are the toilets you can choose from:

  • Pressure-assisted
Toilets that use compressed air to give your flush a boost without using more water are called pressure-assisted toilets. They tend to be a little noisy and pricey.
  • Double Cyclone and Tornado Flush
The two toilets created by Toto use pressurized lateral jets at the top of the bowl to create a vortex flush that pushes the excrement down and cleans the bowl. Five nozzles on the Tornado flush create a powerful vortex flush to push waste down and clean the toilet bowl. Two nozzles on the Double Cyclone flush push waste down and clean the toilet bowl.
  • Siphon Jet
Siphon Jet. What is a siphon jet flush toilet? You can install a separate small reservoir tank alongside other systems. Water is discharged with a vacuum pull to increase the power of your flush.
  • Double Vortex
The Double Vortex toilet from American Standard uses dual nozzles at the top of the bowl and the drain to produce a more substantial flush. Water flows from both nozzles towards the drain and away simultaneously, generating a solid flow.

You can boost your toilet’s flush performance by following these steps.

Maintaining a high flush rate with your current toilet may be difficult if you have a low-flow toilet. However, you may be able to enhance your flush rate by maintaining what you already have. Here are some tips:

  • Before replacing your toilet, check for clogs in your pipes to see if your low flow is simply because of clogs. Ensure to check your toilet drain for clogs as well.
  • Adjusting the float valve, ensure your toilet tank has enough water to flush correctly. In case the water level is low, you might not have enough water to flush your toilet correctly. Position the float valve between the minimum and maximum marks on the tank.
  • Clean the rim jets by scraping off the mineral buildup with a thin wire if they become clogged over time. An unbendable wire coat hanger is an easy do-it-yourself tool.
  • A toilet tank soak using vinegar and baking soda can help your toilet function properly. Find the rubber tubing over the overflow valve on your toilet tank and keep it intact while you pour in a quart of white vinegar. Pour the vinegar into the tube and let it sit for about 15 minutes. Then, sprinkle small amounts of baking soda until you hear it sizzling. Do not flush for two hours after the vinegar has been added, then flush it again to see if the flow has improved.
  • A faulty flush valve can hamper flushing. Look for a flush valve at the base of your toilet tank. It’s the piece that lifts when you flush to release water, so jiggle the handle if you can’t locate it. A damaged or cracked flush valve may reduce flushing power.

To verify whether your flush valve is working correctly, put a few drops of food coloring in your toilet tank. If the colored water in the toilet bowl is not sealed correctly, you must replace your flush valve. If all else fails and you still do not have enough power, it is time to get a new toilet. If you have a high-power toilet that you wish to have installed, we can help.

Converting a Low-Flow Toilet to High-Flow

It’s regrettable, but you cannot convert a low-flow toilet to a high-flow or pressure-assisted toilet. You must replace a gravity-flush toilet with a pressure-assisted flush toilet.

Choosing a low-flow toilet might be beneficial to you.

The toilet you choose, low-flush or high-efficiency, should provide everything down with only one flush. A low-flush toilet can save water (provided you don’t flush twice). There are a lot of water-saving toilets that don’t leave everything half-flushed. Using less water while still getting everything down is a great way. Dual-flush toilets offer a “half flush” option for liquid waste and a “full flush” for solids. If you don’t have any issues with a gravity-assisted model, stick with that.

A More Powerful Flush Upgrade

A more powerful flush pushes waste further and faster, resulting in fewer or no clogs. Keeping sewer lines and septic tanks healthier also reduces the chance of backups.

What Causes a Toilet Flange Leak? https://autryplumbing.com/what-causes-a-toilet-flange-leak/ https://autryplumbing.com/what-causes-a-toilet-flange-leak/#respond Tue, 04 Oct 2022 23:58:29 +0000 https://autryplumbing.com/?p=12812 Today for another DIY plumbing tip, we'd like to help you diagnose and repair a toilet flange leak to get things back to normal.

The post What Causes a Toilet Flange Leak? appeared first on Autry Plumbing LLC - Plumbers Asheville NC.

]]>
If you have a leak, your toilet is most likely due to a broken toilet flange. The toilet has a metal coupling called a toilet flange that connects the sewer pipe that comes up through the floor to the base of the toilet. If the component becomes worn or breaks, it may leak. We can help you diagnose and repair a toilet flange leak to get things back to normal. It’s a common issue, but we can assist you if you understand how to identify and fix it.

Five Signs You Have a Toilet Flange Leak

Flanges and wax rings under the toilet can break, lean, or malfunction, leading to a leaking toilet. Listed below are some symptoms of a leaking toilet caused by a faulty flange or wax ring:

  1. A toilet wobble is a sign that the wax ring and flange underneath it are failing. Even if the toilet isn’t leaking yet, a wobbly toilet indicates that these parts are malfunctioning. Their main job is to keep the toilet anchored to the ground, so wobbling signals that these components are not functioning correctly.
  2. Unpleasant odors can enter your living space if the wax ring is cracked or falling apart, allowing gases to escape.
  3. There may be water puddling at the junction of your toilet and floor if your toilet isn’t leaking from the toilet tank. The flange is the most likely cause if there is water collected at the base of the toilet.
  4. A spongy or springy floor around the toilet indicates that the flange is leaking, allowing toilet water to soak into the subfloor and make it less rigid. Wood rot may result, which may be a safety concern and require additional repairs.
  5. The flange leaks, causing the toilet’s tile or linoleum to buckle, rise or crack. If the subfloor becomes soaked, the flooring will rise as the adhesive fails, resulting in an uneven surface.

DIY Toilet Flange Repair

To repair a damaged or loose toilet flange, you must turn off the water, disconnect and remove the toilet, remove the old flange and wax ring and clean out any debris that might impede its performance. A new flange and wax ring are installed, the toilet is re-set and reattached, and the water is turned back on and inspected for leaks.

Sometimes the bolts securing the toilet are rusty, and the nuts are difficult to remove. In that instance, you may need to use a hacksaw or reciprocating saw to terminate the existing bolts and replace them with new ones. It is advised that toilet flanges are replaced every six to seven years to keep them in good condition.

Finding a plumber to help with toilet flange leaks is what you need.

It’s better to address a leaking toilet than to face the unpleasant and expensive consequences later. A leaky toilet may cause damage to your home, as well as health and safety issues resulting from bacteria-laden water and sewer gases entering the structure.

When the crisp autumn weather rolls in and the heat of the summer dissipates, the temperature change can create its own issues. Here are some plumbing problems you may encounter as the weather cools.

Plumbing Problems

1. Gutter Blockage

When a lot of organic material accumulates in a gutter during cooler weather as the leaves start to fall, it can cause water to overflow and damage your home. Blockages like twigs and leaves can result in water overflow, water damage to your walls and ceilings, corrosion, mold growth, and pest infestations. These blockages must be treated immediately, or they might cause water damage.

2. Leaks

It is essential to inspect your pipes for cracking during winter when they are likely to contract or fill with frozen water. As the weather drops, fluctuating pipes may lead to new leaks, or ones that have been there for a while may get more prominent. Water damage, water contamination in the household, higher utility bills, and costly repairs can result if these problems are not addressed.

3. Invasive Roots

It’s getting cooler and the leaves are beginning to change, and your sewer system may be invaded by tree roots. These obstructions may contribute to water pressure issues and slow drainage.

A leak should be fixed as soon as possible to prevent severe structural damage. Unfortunately, not all leaks are as noticeable as water dripping from faucets or pipes. Ceilings, floors, and walls can be hiding spots for leaks. Here are some things you’ll want to look out for to spot these types of hidden water leaks before serious damage occurs.

  • Wallpaper or Paint That is Peeling or Blistering – Water escaping from a hidden leak in your wall can cause peeling or blistering paint or wallpaper. These blisters can appear anywhere from the substrate to the top two coats of paint. These symptoms may appear whether or not a leak is present. It is crucial that you stay vigilant, as leaks may not always result in these exact symptoms.
  • Wall or Ceiling Discoloration – Over time, walls and ceilings exposed to moisture will likely get stained and discolored. If no apparent water source contributes to the stains, there is likely to be a leak inside or above the affected area.

The post What Are the Types of Outdoor Drains? appeared first on Autry Plumbing LLC - Plumbers Asheville NC.

]]>
Standing water near your foundation can cause structural damage or basement leaks, so you should look into the types of outdoor drains as soon as possible. An outdoor drain can be helpful if you live in a region that experiences a lot of seasonal rain or snowmelt. Here, we’ll discuss the various outdoor drains and how they can be used to avoid flooding.

Here Are the Four Types of Outdoor Drains

Outdoor drains are a great help if you live in an area with a lot of seasonal rain or snowmelt. Standing water near your foundation can cause structural damage or basement leaks, so you should seek outdoor drainage solutions as soon as possible. Here, we will discuss the various outdoor drains and their applicability to avoiding flooding.

Depending on your specific situation and requirements, there are several types of outdoor drains to choose from. French drains, dry wells, catch basins, and trench drains are among the most common ones.

French Drain

Standing water often accumulates on flat yards, especially after heavy rain. French drains are installed to control water from staying near the foundation and causing damage. These drains consist of perforated pipes that surround the foundation of a building, with a trench of gravel surrounding them.

Catch Basin

Catch basins serve the same purpose as street and parking lot drains, collecting water and directing it to a reservoir or sump pump so it can be carried away from home. They are typically arranged at the lowest point on your property, and if you have a large estate, you may require more than one to carry all the water away.

Standing water can be eliminated through a sump pump after it collects in an underground tank with a metal grate at ground level. A catch basin is an excellent option if you have a lot of standing water and your soil does not drain well. This might be a practical solution if you have heavy clay soil.

Dry Well

A dry well is built to collect rainwater as it flows downward because of gravity and distributes it across the surrounding soil. Instead of pooling in one location, it accumulates in the dry well before dissipating into the surrounding soil. This procedure is beneficial for reducing waterlogged soil in low areas of your property. It is a suitable method for collecting rainwater from downspouts and gutters.

Trench Drain

A trench drain performs the same function as a French drain in diverting water away from your house’s foundation. If the land slopes towards your house rather than away from it, a trench drain is a better choice. A channel drain, a trench drain, is a barrier grate built to keep out debris. Depending on your needs, it can be created with precast concrete material or cast in location. The channel directs water away from your house and property as water enters the trench.

Standing water around your property can cause damage to your property and infestations, as well as flooding if proper drainage is not in place. Installing an outdoor drain yourself is a challenging undertaking, and it requires a certain level of expertise. If you want to add additional drainage to your property, seek advice before you begin.

This summer, are you thinking about installing a tankless water heater? This may be the perfect opportunity for you to take action. By purchasing a new water heater now, you can take advantage of the best water heater services before the fall weather turns chilly. Being ready is the key to having a comfortable home.  If you’re in the Asheville, NC, area, consider Autry Plumbing for this service.

We are looking forward to helping you when you need a tankless water heater. We would love to talk about making the switch today if you reach out and CONTACT us.

Consider These Benefits of Going Tankless

  • Power Savings
The fact that a tankless water heater uses a lot less energy than a standard one. This is one of the best reasons to make the change. This is attributable to the fact that tankless water heaters do not suffer from standby energy loss. In this case, your water heater boils a sizable volume of water and then saves it for later use. Although this has historically been the typical way to heat water, there are other options. When you turn on the tap, tankless water heaters generate the hot water immediately, wasting neither time nor energy.
  • Cost Reduction
Energy savings will also give you cost savings. You’ll find that your water bills are cheaper as a consequence of not having to wait for the water to get hot. Tankless water heaters are the ideal choice if you want to cut costs. Although they are more expensive to install, the continued savings are worth it.
  • Takes Up Less Room
Have you ever been unhappy with how much room your water heater occupies?   Consider going tankless if you want a unit that uses the least amount of space and is as effective as possible.
  • Extended Life
Like any other system, tankless water heaters are expected to endure for around 20 years. Additionally, they may last a lot longer than other systems, as these devices are a generation ahead. The homeowner usually benefits from longer lifespans which is beneficial because replacing a water heater can be expensive.

Ready to Make the Change?

So perhaps you’re ready to make the change. If so, it’s time for you to set up a meeting with a member of our staff. You can count on our assistance with the switch. If you don’t make the right calculations, a tankless water heater system won’t necessarily provide superior service. We’re ready to assist you in locating the ideal tankless water heater solution for you.

We look forward to collaborating with you on how we can exactly match your needs.

One of a home’s most essential systems is the plumbing system. The funny thing is that since your plumbing system is largely out of sight and out of mind, you might not be aware of how important it is until there’s a problem. If you require professional drain cleaning in Asheville, NC, we are the team for you. We know how to clean drains, and we can make the process simple for you.

Today we are going to run through everything you need to know about drain cleaning. Cleaning your drains regularly will keep your house functional and odor-free. Let’s get into the crucial information you need to be aware of.

Professional Drain Cleaning or DIY

Here are some critical details regarding drain cleaning and your home.

  • Avoid Using Chemical Drain Cleaners

A chemical drain cleaner is never going to be the long-term solution to any plumbing-related issue. We know the temptation. You notice that your drains are running a little slow and that they smell unpleasant, but you are unsure whether the situation warrants picking up that chemical drain cleaner off the shelf and proceeding to the checkout. It looks like it may be a good decision. You read on the label that it can quickly clear a clog and let you get on with your day, but it may not be the best choice for your plumbing system.

Chemical drain cleaners are able to temporarily fix the problem, but in the long run, they might cause worse problems that cost more to fix. Grease and filth may simply migrate around in the pipe, despite the fact that chemical drain cleaners are intended to dissolve the clog. They may also eat away at the drain pipe lining, necessitating a complete replacement of the pipes, which can be very expensive.

Professional Hydro Jetting to Get Drains Clean

Hydro-jetting is the process of cleaning the gunk from your home’s pipes with highly pressurized water. The fact is that hydro-jetting is extremely effective. Although the technology is excellent, you must ensure that our experts are skilled in its use. We guarantee our work.

  • Video Pipe Inspections
